Review Text

  • By T. C. Hood on 1 June 2006

As a hobbyist programmer and survivor of many badly-written C and BASIC textbooks, I recognised the warning signs early in the first chapters of Build a Program Now!: 9 pages of needlessly detailed instructions on installing the IDE are quickly followed by a bewildering 92-line program, none of which is explained.Like the many other programming guides which promise results Now!, this book often requires the reader to type out many lines of code which he or she does not yet understand. It will teach you to create a few specific applications very quickly, but you won't know how they work. Ultimately, this will be of very little use to someone who is serious about learning VB.

I have not bought this book as freely available from Microsoft if you download Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition (again for free). But I have read it from the PDF version downloaded. The book is OK as a means of explaining various (but limited) key features of the language but not a lot of good to explain Object Oriented Programming (OOP) in any more than passing detail. I am an experienced VB programmer of many years but I thought it may help my son get to grips with the basics; but unfortunately not. There are more meaningful books out there. The only benefit to purchasing is to save the 200+ pages of printout and have a nice shiny cover.
